Ümraniye Municipality was founded in 1963. However, new settlements in and around Ümraniye was founded after 1970. Ümraniye was a village under Üsküdar District in 1980; however, the fact that one can easily get to the other parts of the city via the Bosporus Bridge and the ring road enabled our district to be a preferred one. As its development resulted in some administrative problems; with a regulation, Ümraniye was founded as a new district by getting other residential areas around it and also some villages from Üsküdar.
Being in the east side of the metropolitan borders of Istanbul, Ümraniye developed rapidly after concentration of industrial activities in 1970s. Before getting the municipality status, Ümraniye developed under Üsküdar district; And within its settlement process; it started to serve other settlements around it with its development in industry, services and trade sectors.
Ümraniye composes 11.5% of the east side and 3% of the whole Istanbul. As of 1970, in Ümraniye, 912 people work in agriculture sector, 33.017 people work in industrial sector and 38.793 people work in services sector. Services sector comes first with 53.4% share, and the agriculture sector is the last one with 1.2%.
In 1940, when it was under Üsküdar, the population of Ümraniye is known to be 501.<0} {0><}0{>In 1955, it was a village the population of which was 1.781.<0} {0><}0{>Being a Town Municipality in 1963, Ümraniye was "abolished” by the military administration in 1980 and it was linked to Üsküdar Municipality. In 1989 our district regained its status of district municipality, and also its identity was changed as district center.
