PACKAGE WASTES

It is defined as wastes produced from valuable materials such as paper/cardboard, plastic, metal, glass and composite caused by empty packages used in the daily life.

Paper/Cardboard Wastes:

Paper/cardboard boxes, parcels, used newspapers, magazines, books and papers, etc.

Plastic Wastes:

Drink bottles, shampoo boxes, boxes of cleaning materials, fluid oil, packages of yogurt and margarine, plastic jerry cans and boxes.

Metal Wastes:

Metal drink boxes, tins and cans, etc.

Glass Wastes:

Drink bottles, jars, etc.

Composite Wastes:

Drink cardboards (milk, fruit juices, etc.)

Consisting 30% of domestic wastes, these wastes must be recycled through a collection separate from domestic wastes.
Recycling:
Package wastes are recycled can be reused after some physical, chemical and biological treatments.

Why Recycling?

- It saves our natural resources,
- Saves energy,
- Increases lives of storages as it decreases amount of stored wastes,
- Invests in the future and the economy.

When package wastes are recycled;
With each 1 ton of waste paper/cardboard recycled, 17 trees are saved.
When 1 ton of waste glass is recycled, 100 liters of oil is saved.
With productions made by using recycled metal and plastic materials, 95% energy conservation is ensured.

Don't forget, natural resources are limited, for continuation of life; these resources must be used efficiently.
Each waste given for recycling will add value for a cleaner and livable world.

VEGETABLE OIL WASTES:

Vegetable oil wastes can be oxidized at high temperatures, and after they expire, they exhibit ecotoxic features. It is prohibited to reuse, or release vegetable oil wastes, which are oxidized at high temperatures, directly or indirectly to surface waters, underground waters, seas, sewage systems and drainage systems as well as soil.

Harms of Vegetable Oil Wastes

 1 liter of oil waste can pollute 1 million liter of drinking water.
 Used vegetable oil wastes compose 25% of the domestic waste water pollution.
 KOil wastes reaching seas, rivers and lakes both pollute the environment and harm other living species.
 DVegetable oil wastes cover the water surface and prevent oxygen transfer to water from the air.
 Oil wastes are disintegrated by time in the water, and they consume the oxygen in the water.
 AOil wastes make waste water collection systems (sewage, collector, etc.) narrower and clogged.
 Vegetable oil wastes cause difficulties in purification at purification plants and significantly increase the cost.
 Apart from the multi-million dollars of damage it causes due to repairing and replacement caused by narrow and clogged systems, it also can leak the underground waters and mix with them.

In accordance with the By-law on Controlling Vegetable Oil Wastes;
Article 5 –

e) Oil wastes must be separately stored at their sources.
ı) Oil wastes are collected by recycling plants with collection license as well as collectors granted temporary storing authorization. Vegetable oils can not be collected, bought or sold by real or legal persons apart from those stated above.
k) Restaurants, food plants, hotels, motels, dining halls, touristic facilities and holiday villages as well as other similar facilities producing used frying oil are obliged to make annual agreements with licensed recycling plants or collectors for the purpose of collection of these oils. Waste batteries definitely must not be mixed with domestic wastes and must not be dropped to trash.

Waste batteries must be separately collected and dropped into Waste Battery Boxes.

When put into garbage, waste batteries which are not disposed pollute the resources of air, water and soil; and it is very costly to eliminate this pollution.

After classified according to their types, non-rechargeable waste batteries are disposed at special ferroconcrete storages, ensured to be leakage-free, at regular solid waste storage areas, within the framework of the current APAK by-law. As the Directorate, we ensure waste batteries are collected with waste battery collection bins especially delivered to schools and work places, and they are disposed, in order to prevent harms of waste batteries to the environment.

Our waste battery collection campaign started to increase children awareness at primary schools located in Ümraniye continues. Moreover, upon request, waste battery bins are delivered by our staff.

LATEST WORKS

Within our district, such places as cafes, restaurants, food plants were inspected about the subject of pouring vegetable oil wastes to sewage systems or soil; those without waste oil agreement were told to sign the agreement, and those selling these wastes to unlicensed firms were warned to deliver their wastes to licensed firms.
By making a mutual project with Directorate of License and Audit, these sorts of places at the phase of a license grant are required to have vegetable oil waste agreement.
During inspections, quality of waste oils used was measured, and those with the improper ones were warned.

Inspections and notices were made for medical institutions in our region to make medical waste agreement and separately and regularly collect their medical wastes to deliver them to the collection system of our municipality. They were also informed about the damages to the environment in case they are put to garbage along with domestic wastes.

For separate storage and collection of package wastes from domestic ones, our directorate has started its works and there is an ongoing informative campaign for the sites located in our region.

Package containers and glass boxes were placed at several locations in our district.
