Acting as a responsible municipality in overseeing public interest and need, the Municipality of Ümraniye continues to support the Turkish Red Crescent at every opportunity. In this aspect, the Ümraniye Municipality continues to be one of the leading municipalities in Turkey.
Every year, thousands of individuals in Turkey die from not being able to find blood after accidents or illnesses. In contrast, research shows that the amount of blood donated in Turkey, home to roughly 72 million, is very low. Whereas, along with saving the lives of thousands, donating blood also positively affects the donor’s health.
In order for citizens to donate and cater to those who need blood, the Municipality of Ümraniye swiftly completed and opened the Red Crescent Services Building. While the preparation of the project began in July 2014, it was opened in May with Health Minister, Dr. Mehmet Müezzinoğlu, in attendance. Along with gaining the municipality a service building, the Municipality of Ümraniye continues to support the Red Crescent’s work in blood donation in Ümraniye as well as projects directed at increasing blood donors.
Indicating that Ümraniye is a driving force amongst Istanbul’s Anatolian Municipalities concerning blood donation, “We are able to collect a substantial amount of blood in Ümraniye. The residents in the area are very conscious and their support is important for us,” said the Director of Kartal Blood Donation Center, Dr. Tanju Levent Çetinkaya. Dr. Çetinkaya also indicated that the region plays a great role in addressing Istanbul’s daily need for blood.
