Municipality of Ümraniye, as it is its custom, is providing numerous services and organizing colourful events for Ramadan this year. The Municipality will serve “iftar” meals for the breaking of the fast at sunset to approximately five thousand people at six different locations, and will provide Social Market aids to six thousand five hundred families.
Municipality of Ümraniye brings thousands of its residents together each year through Ramadan activities and events; and the schedule for this year’s events is finally set. The program is filled with numerous cultural activities to ensure a happy Ramadan experience.
The Ottoman Tradition Lives on
The tradition of “temcid” is reviving in Ümraniye; back in the times of
Ottoman it was the singing of hymns and invocations composed in various modes of religious music and performed by experts from minarets at the time the fasting begins for the day.
This long lost tradition of old Ramadans “Temcid Salası” will resurface in Ümraniye the first day of Ramadan, on the night the 27th becomes the 28th. The silence of the night will be decorated with the “Temcid-i Şerif” (poems praising the Prophet Muhammed (pbuh)) sung from certain mosques and the residents of Ümraniye will wake to eat their pre-dawn meals before starting their fasts for the day. Furthermore, tables will be set in front of the Municipality to serve pre-dawn meals for a thousand people.
A SELJUK EMPIRE THEMED RAMADAN STAND in the ÜMRANİYE SQUARE
The Municipality of Ümraniye has built a stand in Ümraniye Square that carries the hints of Seljuk architecture. This stand will be used for numerous activities to best experience the month of Ramadan. Concerts, movies, special events for children, and various stage performances will be held for the habitants of the district. Also, Fellow Countrymen Associations will have their own custom designed stands in the square to meet with their fellow countrymen and present the cultural elements of their hometowns. In addition to these stands, special iftar (breaking of the fast at sundown) meals will be served to a different fellow countrymen association at the Municipality Wedding Hall every evening for them to meet with their fellow countrymen for the associations of Şile-Ağva, Ordu, Sivas, Rumeli, Çorum, Artvin, Samsun, Serhat Cities, Van, Bolu, Yozgat, Rize, Erzurum, Giresun, Kastamonu, Çankırı, Trabzon, Bayburt, Ağrı, Bingöl, Ankara, Balıkesir, Sinop, Gümüşhane, Kayseri and Siirt.
EVERY DAY FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE WILL BREAK THEIR FAST TOGETHER
Municipality of Ümraniye will serve iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) meals every day to five thousand people at six different locations which consist of facilities that belong to the municipality and wedding halls across the district. These locations will be as follows: Ümraniye Municipality Wedding Hall, Çağrı Wedding Hall, Başak Wedding Hall, Umut Wedding Hall, Namlı Wedding Hall and Şark Wedding Hall.
THIRTY THOUSAND INHABITANTS OF TEN NEIGBOURHOODS AT THE SAME TABLE
This year, as well as previous years, Municipality of Ümraniye will repeat its tradition of organizing neighbourhood iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) meals. At ten different neighbourhoods, depending on the size of the said neighbourhood, tables will be set for two or four thousand people in order to reinforce the feelings of fellowship and cooperation among the people.
EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES
Municipality of Ümraniye has planned numerous events and activities to ensure a better Ramadan experience for the inhabitants of the district. Concerts for all ages will be held, movies will be shown, and special activities for the children and various stage performances will be available.
The lead characters Karagöz and Hacivat of our old tradition of Turkish shadow plays will be present for this year’s Ramadan activities as well. In addition to these shadow play performances, movies for children, puppet shows, plays, and numerous stage performances will be presented to the inhabitants of Ümraniye at the Ümraniye Square every night after the iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) meals.
The Municipality of Ümraniye will provide six thousand five hundred families Social Market aids. Furthermore it will set a great example of solidarity and cooperation by identifying one thousand seven hundred fifty orphans and the children of martyrs and give those vouchers for clothing so that they too can get new clothes for the holiday that follows the month of Ramadan.
“LE TRİO JOUBRAN” WILL PLAY FOR ÜMRANİYE
In addition to before mentioned activities and events, “Le Trio Joubran” founded by the Palestinian brothers Samir, Wissam, and Adnan will perform their instrumental music that follows the four centuries old lute tradition for the inhabitans of Ümraniye during the after iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) activities.
SPECIAL RAMADAN DISCUSSIONS LED BY WELL KNOWN AUTHORS AND PREACHERS
Municipality of Ümraniye will host famous authors and preachers during the Ramadan activities. Senai Demirci, Ömer Döngeloğlu, Mehmet Talu, Necmettin Nursaçan ve Yavuz Bahadıroğlu will address the people during the discussions held at the Ümraniye Square.
CHANNEL 24 WILL STREAM LIVE FROM THE ÜMRANİYE SQUARE
Channel 24 will stream its special iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) program from the Ümraniye Square. The live program will host esteemed guests and will also feature the activities and events held by the Municipality of Ümraniye.

Mayor of Ümraniye stated that Ramadan is the month of mercy and abundance, and that as a Municipality they plan to seize this opportunity to experience the best of this month during which the feelings of fellowship and communion reach the highest degrees, by organizing suitable activities and events. Mayor Hasan Can said “We’ll serve iftar meals to our citizens throughout Ramadan at six different locations, like we did in the previous years. We’ll try to put a smile on the faces of our less fortunate citizens with our Social Market Aids. We’ll hold the iftar meals at the Wedding Hall of the Municipality and other wedding halls across the district. We’ll serve neighbourhood iftar meals to ten different neighbourhoods. We’ll continue our tradition of Ramadan celebrations with the events and activities we have organized. As we did in the previous years, we again aim to provide a happy and peaceful Ramadan experience for the people of Ümraniye.”
