IN THE LAST 12 YEARS, WE HAVE ENJOYED THE BRIGHTEST TERMS OF THE HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC

Making a farewell speech following the handover ceremony, Abdullah Gül said: “'I feel a great honour to be handing over the presidential office that I assumed for 7 years, to the new President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Thus, this handover ceremony has truly become a source of real happiness for me. Because this ceremony has a special importance. With my friend Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the 12th President who was elected by the nation, I have enjoyed a friendship, common cause and shared a term of office for more than 40 years. I am one of those who know best his excellent administration and leadership skills and his ambition to serve his country and humanity. As for the last 14 years, we first founded our political party together and later worked shoulder to shoulder in administration in different positions. I take proud in saying that our Republic has enjoyed its brightest terms in the history in these 12 years. We have achieved historic, economic, political and social reforms and transformations together. My dear brother, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will do even further and I believe it from the heart.

WE WILL WALK TOGETHER IN THIS PATH FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW TURKEY AND ITS FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

Afterwards, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan the 12th President of the Republic of Turkey took the floor and began his speech by greeting the guests: “My dear brother Abdullah Gül, the 11th  President of the Republic of Turkey, honorable heads of state, esteemed ministers, distinguished guests who have participated in this meaningful ceremony from inside our country or abroad and our valuable citizens, I greet you from the depths of my heart and say welcome to all our guests who are here to share this significant day and the excitement with us. You have honoured us with your presence. In the first hours that I have started my duty as 12th President of the Republic of Turkey, I would like to express my endless thanks to my valuable nation who are watching us from their television. For the first time, in the 91-year-history of the Republic and in the 2000-year-history of Turkey, a president was elected by the votes of the nation who rule this country by making a choice in the elections.

I take proud in being the first President who has been elected by the nation. Thus, I am aware that my responsibilities towards my nation have increased even more. I offer my thanks to my nation who voted for the constitutional amendments by 69% in 2007 and who voted by 52% for me on 10th of August. As long as I live, I will do my best to merit these votes and to cherish this trust.

From this day on, Turkey will focus on 2023 targets without losing time in old discussions, wasting its energy in vain and giving any opportunity whatsoever to polarization. The elected President and the elected government will collaborate and develop our economy even further, in harmony. Social welfare will be increased and the diversity among the individuals of the society will be regarded as richness. The road to the EU will be followed in a more determined way. The unity and the integrity of the 77 million people, especially the resolution process will be established much stronger.

Our struggle for the future that has been continuing for 91 years and will continue with new gains will never be interrupted. In the first moments of this new Turkey and the new beginning, I wish our country, our nation and the humanity any blessing from Allah. I once again thank individually all of our guests for participating and offer my gratitude to my valuable nation. We will walk all together on the path towards establishing and developing a new Turkey.

May Allah open our way, be with us and never embarrass us. I greet you all with love and respect.
