Getting all of the valid votes used at the 1. Extraordinary Grand Congress of AK Party, Ahmet Davutoğlu has been elected the new Head of the ruling AK Party.
1. Extraordinary Grand Meeting of AK Party was launched with a higher number of participants than the minimum number set for grand congresses in the articles of the political party regulation. For the congress, thousands of supporters gathered in front of Ankara Arena Sports Hall beginning from the early hours of the day. In the election where Hasan Can, the Mayor of Ümraniye Municipality took part as a delegate, Haluk Ipek, the Chairman of the Council announced that Ahmet Davutoğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and a Member of Parliament representing Konya was elected as the new Head of AK Party.
THE 12th PRESIDENT RECEP TAYYIP ERDOĞAN ADDRESSED HIS SUPPORTERS
The 12th President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan began his speech saying that it was not a farewell speech but about a change of title only. After addressing his supporters outside the hall where the extraordinary congress of AK Party was being held, he met his supporters inside Ankara Arena Sports Hall. While greeting the public, Erdoğan said: “I want you to know that this speech does not imply any change in our mission as it is just a change of title and never a farewell. It is an inception, a new beginning. You can be sure of that. You, my dear brothers and sisters coming from 81 different provinces of our country have made clear one point. We are one soul, we are brothers. We are Turkey. We, my brothers, never go astray from our way. We have braced the entire nation of 77 million people. We have brought service to 780 km away lands of our country and we will continue to do so in the future. We have improved the conditions from Edirne to Hakkari, from Sinop to Hatay. We have achieved a modern Turkey. We believed in one nation, one flag, one country and one government. We will keep going in this way.
Our common candidate has been Ahmet Davutoğlu, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Member of Parliament representing Konya. I believe that it will be him who wins the election, with the alliance of all the participants of this congress. After we hold the oath-taking ceremony for the Presidency tomorrow, we will give the winner the power to form the new cabinet following the handover ceremony. We will form the new cabinet on Friday. I want you to know that I do not leave you. So far, I have been with you with the title of Head of AK Party and the Prime Minister but from now on, I will be together with you as the first President elected by popular vote on the 10th of August.
I EXPRESS MY SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR PRESIDENT
Elected as the new Head of AK Party, Ahmet Davutoğlu said “I greet the honourable President, all of the esteemed fellows and officials with whom we had a common cause, with great love and respect. I would like to offer my thanks and gratitude once again. May Allah give us the strength to fulfil our duties. I essentially would like to thank our dear President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for the support and encouragement he gives me.
Turkey has never witnessed such a handover ceremony before. Today, we have seen a ceremony that reflects full unity and integrity without any difference in opinion. Today, AK Party has shown its difference with the ethics and morality policy that it follows. Also, another handover ceremony will be held tomorrow between two Presidents that come from the same political party and of the same political view for the first time in the history of Turkish democracy. Dear Abdullah Gül, the 11th President will hand over the presidential office to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who was elected by the votes of the nation. In the history, the handover ceremonies were not performed in such peace and unity even though Atatürk and İnönü were from the same political party, as well.”
After the speeches, it was time for delegates to vote. Getting all of the valid votes, Ahmet Davutoğlu was elected as the Head of AK Party. Mayor of Ümraniye Municipality Hasan Can congratulated the new Head of AK Party who accepted the congratulations after the election.
