Mayor of Ümraniye Hasan Can also gave a speech during the event: “Today we are witnessing the 11th of this happy event. As the Municipality of Ümraniye we had 1600 chidren circumcised this year. Every year we hold a feast for the children we get circumcised. We dress them from head to toe. We hold this traditional feast in this beautiful square. We provide beauty to Ümraniye since the day we came into service. This year, we organized this event to celebrate our children’s initiation to manhood. By doing so we get to share their happiness on such a special occasion, and help their families by providing the celebrations. Today is the day they are initiated to manhood as well the day of their circumcision feast. Our children, surrounded by their family and friends, get to celebrate this day with joy. In a few days, the blessed month of Ramadan will be upon us. On the 2nd of this month we had held the opening of our vocational courses’ exhibition; hopefully with the beginning of Ramadan we’ll hold our Ramadan activities together as well. Just like previous years we’ll get to see 20-25 fellow countrymen associations’ stands on this square. Just like previous years we’ll serve iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) meals at 5-6 different locations and several wedding halls. And as you all know, we’ll set tables on the streets for iftar (breaking of fast at sundown) meals in 10 different neighbourhoods. With the cards given to them families in need will be able to shop from the Social Market we’ll provide. Plus, we’ll increase the number of Social Markets to four till the end of this year.” Mayor Hasan Can presented wrist watches to some of the circumcised children on the stage, and had photos taken with them.
The kids were visibly happy as they got their gifts from the four stands built around the square, and the parents expressed their gratitude to Mayor Hasan Can for organizing the feast. Also, there were several “Pop Corn” stands across the square serving pop corn, cotton candy, and sharbat (a traditional sugary fruit juice) to the children.
