‘The Media’s Discourse and Terror’ panel organized by the Ümraniye Municipality, gained a lot of attention from the media. The panel made its way onto Turkey’s agenda with its esteemed press representatives and panel consisting of four sessions.
By organizing the Media’s Discourse and Terror panel and bringing together various press representatives, the Ümraniye Municipality allowed the opportunity for evaluating the relationship between media and terror. Alongside Ümraniye Municipality Mayor Hasan Can and his wife Saliha Can, Ümraniye District Governor Suat Dervişoğlu, the AK Party's Ümraniye District Head Enver Sedat Çakıroğlu, Esq., Ümraniye Municipal Director of National Education Süleyman Gökçimen, Ümraniye District Police Chief Hüseyin Göllüce, Ümraniye Mufti İlyas Yılmaztürk, Ümraniye Municipality Vice-Mayors, unit managers, neighbourhood chiefs, NGO representatives, members of the press and many citizens attended the panel.
MAYOR HASAN CAN: “A NATIONAL AWAKENING AND SOLIDARITY CAN BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A SHARED DISCOURSE”
Giving the opening speech, Ümraniye Municipality Mayor Hasan Can said, “Terror, a problem throughout the world, is also an important topic in our country. Therefore, not being insensitive to the issue we’ve organized a ‘The Media’s Discourse and Terror’ panel. We can only fight terror via correct communication and unity in discourse. Since the medium of the nation’s voice is the media, we can only achieve this through a unity in discourse.” Saying that a national awakening and solidarity can be achieved through a shared discourse, Mayor Hasan Can said, “The media’s discourse poses a great importance in discouraging terrorism. I hope that the topics discussed here, in accordance with the panel’s objective allow for the integrity of the country.”
In the first session, with 24 TV executive editor, Murat Çiçek, moderating, and NTV News new anchor Oğuz Hasever, Star Newspaper executive editor Nuh Albayrak, and Güneş Newspaper executive editor Turgay Güler, Murat Çiçek, Oğuz Hasever Nuh Albayrak, and Turgay Güler discussed the media’s relationship with terror and the former’s attitude in dealing with the latter, much to the great interest of the audience.
Balçiçek İlter, Habertürk Newspaper journalist and presenter, moderated the second session. With Türkiye Newspaper executive editor İsmail Kapan, A-Haber presenter Erkan Tan and Sabah Newspaper journalist Hilal Kaplan’s attendance, the session dealt with the impact of laws for the prevention of using media discourse as a medium of terror.
In the third session, with Habertürk TV’s executive editor Veyis Ateş’s moderation and the presence of Channel 7’s chairman of the executive board Zahid Akman, Sabah Newspaper journalist Melih Altınok and Türkiye Newspaper journalist Yıldıray Oğur, the affect of protecting the unity of social discourse in media discourse was discussed.
Moderated by Kanaltürk and Bugün TV executive editor Ahmet Gemici and with Yeni Akit Newspaper journalist Serdar Arseven, Star Newspaper journalist Ahmet Kekeç, Sabah Newspaper journalist Fahrettin Altun and Yenişafak Newspaper columnist Nedret Ersanel’s attendance, the fourth session dealt with terrorism’s relationship with mediums of propaganda.
Finding itself on Turkey’s agenda, “The Media’s Discourse and Terror” panel, one of the Ümraniye Municipality’s foremost social responsibility events, ended with Ümraniye Municipal Mayor Hasan Can’s closing remarks. Saying, “Every one of our valuable press representatives participating in the panel have expressed, in varying fashions, the same truth,” and thanking everyone who contributed to the panel, Mayor Hasan Can ended his speech.
